How can religion be more important to someone than their own children?

I've been doing a little study tonight in R&S, and almost every single Christian who answered my questions would rather neglect their children and let them grow up without a parent than denounce their religion (even if it was just for a moment and they didn't really mean it). What does this say about Christianity? Sure, your faith is strong. And maybe, MAYBE you'll wind up in Heaven and see your family again there. But I find it SICK that Christians possess such a raging sense of irresponsibility! If this is truly how you think, could you at least please stop having children?
